Years after release, GTA V still has that pull a lot of open-world games lose after the credits roll. You load in for a quick drive, maybe test a new route across the city, and before long you're deep into some ridiculous chain of events. A map that still feels worth exploringSan Andreas sells the fantasy better than most giant maps do. It's not only the size. It's the way the place shifts around you. The city has noise, traffic, bad decisions on every corner. Drive long enough and suddenly you're out in the scrub, with empty roads and dusty air. Keep going and now you're climbing into the hills or flying over the coast. No loading screen, no break in rhythm. You just move. That's what makes the map stick in your head. You start remembering shortcuts, favourite roads, the best spots to ditch the cops, the parts of town that always seem to turn into trouble.
The sandbox is where hours disappearWhat keeps people around isn't only the campaign. It's all the side stuff that somehow becomes the main event for an evening. You might tune a car for ages and then wreck it ten minutes later. You might play tennis, hit the shooting range, take a dirt bike somewhere it absolutely shouldn't be, or spend half an hour seeing how long you can stay airborne after stealing a plane. GTA V is great at letting players make their own fun without forcing it. Even the smaller systems help. Weapons feel punchy, cars all handle a bit differently, and messing about with friends in Online adds that extra unpredictability no scripted mission can match.
Why players still returnPart of GTA V's staying power is simple: it gives you control without making everything feel safe or tidy. You can plan a heist, follow the story, and enjoy the big cinematic moments, sure. But you can also ignore all that and just see where the night goes. That's where the game's personality really lives. Los Santos still feels like a place where anything might happen, and that's not something most games can say years later.
